Whilst a shower is highly desirable, most family bathrooms centre around the bath, with bathtime being an important ritual in the family routine. So, how is it possible to create a family bathroom that covers both functionality and style?
Small shower enclosures should be avoided in family bathrooms. Including a wet room style shower is a practical addition to a family bathroom for children and those with mobility problems. With no shower tray, it’s simply a case of walking in and out, as a wetroom’s floor is level and slip-resistant throughout. While fixed overhead showers look great, it’s a good idea to include an additional handheld shower to make it easier for showering children.
Including a bath in a family bathroom is a must. Baths are safer for younger children, especially babies and toddlers, providing a safer and more fun bathing experience than a shower could provide. For style, a large freestanding bath can be a stylish addition to the room, however, if you are pushed for space you could get a smaller version of the same design to save room. That being said, having a freestanding bath and shower unit will instantly add a touch of luxury to your bathroom.
If you are short on space and want a shower and a bath, consider a flexible shower bath, with plenty of space for both bathing and showering. This is also beneficial for older children and adults, especially those in a rush, giving them a choice without removing the practicality of a bath for younger children.
As is the case with most family bathrooms, there will certainly be lots of storage required for those toiletries, medicines, bath toys and more that you don’t want everyone seeing. One thing that’s for certain is that you can never have too much storage space in a family bathroom. Adding a cabinet below the basin and storage within the mirror cabinet above is a great way to discretely store anything you don’t want on show. Creating alcoves within the walls of shower enclosures is another great way to store bottles tidily.
A back-to-wall toilet not only provides a modern, sleek look, but is a real time saver when it comes to cleaning. As this style of toilet sits against the wall or as part of a unit, the cistern and plumbing are completely hidden from view, making cleaning much easier, not to mention the added convenience for toilet training when it comes to children. For added safety, always go for a soft close toilet seat, to avoid any trapped fingers.
